Task: Prevent reinforcements’ approach from direction of KUZMICHI, GONCHARA, PITOMNIK. Be ready to destroy enemy tanks and infantry. Be ready to suppress enemy artillery.

In order to make defense stronger – make a defensive zone, extensively using system of minefields, wire entanglements, dragons' teeth, ditches, and obstacles which hard to spot.

Boundaries’ upgrading must be complete before the end of 2.9.42, widely using improvised means.



PARTICULAR COMBAT ORDER No 0086/op. SW Front HQ. 4.9.42 2.00.


1. Commandarm of 62nd Army ordered: in the morning of 4.9.42 make a counterstrike in the direction of OPYTNAYA STANCIYA, TALOVOY, YEZHOVKA.
a/ With two regiments of 112th Rifle Division, 27th, 99th Tank Br, from front of booth (?), which is 2 km S of GUMRAK, area No 6 strike in direction of TALOVOY, OPYTNAYA STANCIYA, YEZHOVKA.
b/ With one regiment of 35th Rifle Division, Military-Political school, 196th Rifle Division strike from front of forest E of OPYTNAYA STANCIYA in direction of YEZHOVKA.
c/ 38th Motorized Rifle Br, 26th Tank Br, 35th Rifle division strike from front of Hill 147.5, VERKHNYAYA YELSHANKA, PESCHANKA – strike in direction of VOROPONOVO, ALEKSEEVKA.
d/ With part of forces /not less than Rifle division/ strike in direction of Hill 145.1, 143.6, and let through our forces, which are advancing from N.

2. TASK: destroy the enemy which has broken through in the area of TALOVOY, OPYTNAYA STANCIYA, YEZHOVKA and restore the situation.

3. Forces and means – 244th, 35th, 196th Rifle divisions, two regiments of 112th Rifle division, Military-Political school, 38th Motorized Rifle Br, 26th, 27th, 99th Tank Br, all artillery and rocket regiments of 62nd Army.

4. Support attack with artillery of N and central sectors, 6th Guards Tank Br and all Guards Mortar Regiments of 62nd A.

The army during the day fought intense combat with the advancing enemy, at the same time, with part of its forces, the Army made a counterattack in the general direction of OPYTNAYA STANCIYA, TALOVOY, EZHOVKA.


The enemy as a result of the advance of 3.9.42 in forces up to one Tank Division /presumably 24th Panzer division/ by the end of the day seized boundary: OPYTNAYA STANCIYA, POLYAKOVKA, VOROPONOVO. At the same time forces of up to an infantry division with tanks were making a supporting strike from the direction of BOLSHAYA ROSSOSHKA and pressed our forces along the line of the railroad, sovkhoz TRAKTORIZACIYA, B. /4km N of GUMRAK/.

From the morning of 4.9 the enemy group by ROSSOSHANSKAYA with a strength of up to two infantry divisions /295th and 76th/ with tanks /up to 80 units/, with units of 60th infantry division, the BASSARGINSKAYA group composed of the 24th Tank Division, 14th Tank Division and units of the 29th Infantry Division, with support of aviation, which had superiority in the skies, fought fierce advancing actions in the general direction of the station SADOVAYA, restricting themselves to holding actions on the front at of LOTASHANKA, (Latoshanka), KONNAYA.
His aviation, having 25-30 planes in the air at any time, actively affected combat formations of infantry and artillery. At 7.00 in direction of Hill 119.1 and E there were up to 75 airplanes at the same time. In the second part of the day the aviation moved its action to the western outskirts of STALINGRAD.


Forces of North combat area – at old boundaries continue to strongly defend, holding the line of defence.


2nd Tank Corps, covering from N with part of forces, with forces of 27th Tank Br, with two regiments of 112th Rifle division, 99th Tank Br, 89th Guards mortar regiment – advancing in the direction of OPYTANYA STANCIYA, YEZHOVKA, met heavy enemy resistance,

PARTICULAR COMBAT ORDER No 116. HQ of 62 Army.
4.9.42 8.45.

1. 2nd Tank Corps /99th, 27th Tank Br/ with two regiments of 112th Rifle Division, 89th Guards Mortar Regiment /from front of B. (balka? Gully?) /south of GUMRAK/ sector No 6 must counterstrike in direction of TALOVOY, YEZHOVKA with the task: eliminate the enemy, which have managed to breakthrough, seize the boundary of TALOVOY, YEZHOVKA and restore the situation, not letting the enemy advance in the direction of STALINGRAD.
Support from 1105th and 1103rd Artillery Regiments.

CP – STALINGRADSKIY.

Discretional line to the right – STALINGRADSKIY, railroad line /GUMRAK, ALEKSEEVKA/.
Discretional line to the left – sector No 6, BABAEVO, YEZHOVKA.

2. 38th Motorized Rifle Br with 26th Tank Br, 83rd Guards Mortar Regiment, having the main group on the left flank, from boundary of Hill 147.5, PESCHANKA, must counterstrike in the direction of VOROPONOVO, ALEKSEEVKA with the task: destroy the enemy in VOROPONOVO, and prevent him withdrawing to the W and SW, throw back him under the strikes of the 2nd Tank Corps.

After this come to boundary /excl/ EZHOVKA, ALEKSEEVKA.

Support from 266th Artillery Regiment, 8th Guards Artillery Regiment.

CP – SADOVAYA.

3. For linking with advancing units from N, Commander of 2nd Tank Corps with forces of 115th Rifle Br. must strike in the direction of Hill 119.7, with the task: come to the boundary of Hill 193.7, 139.7, sovkhoz OPYTNAJA STANCIYA and connect with the Northern grouping.

4. Begin advance with South grouping at 11.30 4.9.42
