Everyone needs a place to stay
The domain name is the postal address but the server hosting the website is the actual building. For a decent website for a small-to-medium enterprise or organisation you probably need the following things...
- Sufficient webspace - about 1 Gigabyte is usually enough for any SME
- Sufficient bandwidth (amount of traffic that can come from your site per month) - usually 50GB is more than enough
- A mailserver - so you can have email addresses with your domain name in them
- Ability to set up databases - any site where users can interact with the webpages will need this
- No spam/pop-ups inflicted on you and your visitors by the hosting company in return for a 'cheaper' deal
Just as importantly you need to know that.... - Your server is reliable - you do not want to lose visitors because the server is down all the time
- The connection is fast - nobody likes sitting and watching a webpage loading for minutes (design is also important here)
- That problems will be addressed as quickly as possible
- The activity of the server is being monitored
- The server is secure (again, the site design is also important here)
At tonygillham.com we offer hosting packages based on our many years of experience, offering you a great deal on hosting, but we can just as easily develop websites for you to sit on your own or a third-party server. Find out more about our hosting packages here.
